Solving on paper is a different activity from solving on a screen: you can rest a pencil, mark up freely, and hand the sheet to someone else. What most printable sudoku fails at is not the puzzle but the layout — grids too small to write in, or four pages of solutions you did not want.

What makes a printable sheet good

Cell size decides everything. A grid printed smaller than about four centimetres square leaves no room for pencil marks, which is precisely what paper is for. Two or four grids per A4 page is the sweet spot; six fits, but only if you write small. Solutions belong on a separate sheet so you cannot see them by accident.

Choosing the difficulty

Printed puzzles are usually solved away from a hint button, so pick one level below what you play on a screen. An easy sheet suits a waiting room; medium suits a train journey; hard and expert are worth taking only if you enjoy putting a puzzle down and coming back to it, because there is nothing to nudge you.

Printing without wasting paper

Print in greyscale — the grids carry no colour information — and check that your printer is not scaling to fit, which shrinks the grid and the writing space with it. If you plan to solve several, print the puzzle pages first, keep the answer pages face down, and only look at them once the whole set is done.

For classrooms and children

Four-by-four and six-by-six grids work far better on paper than on a phone for younger children, because the boxes are large and a pencil is forgiving. Worksheets in those sizes come with their own answer sheet, so a teacher or parent can check a stack quickly.
